About Greg Benz

I am a wedding and portrait photographer based in Minneapolis.  My style has developed with 10 years of experience.  I first picked up the camera in a serious way back in 2000 when I was living in London.  My interest in documenting my travels quickly turned into a love for photography.  I've never received formal training in photography, I've developed my style and technique through working with numerous other photographers, reading every book and magazine I can get my hands on, and shooting literally hundreds of thousands of photographs.  I would define my artistic style as focused on telling personal stories with the use of dramatic lines and light.

Thank you for checking out my work!,

Nicollet and the City

Man was this a cold shoot!  An hour of standing around on a night when it was about 5 degrees with a breeze, and I was kneeling in snow to set up the camera.  Thankfully I had a hat, ski jacket, sweater, double layer gloves (fingerless for warmth and thin gloves underneath so I could work the camera), a scarf, and long underwear.  My fingers were on fire when they got back in the warmth!

Technique: 5 shot HDR (-2,-1,0,1,2).  Slight color adjustment and fixed car lights in Photoshop (the emergency vehicle lights and white car lights needed a little touch-up).  I had to really jack up my tripod to get the right angle…  one leg was set much longer than the others to angle the camera out over the edge, and I hooked my camera bag to the tripod to weight it down for stability (and as an insurance policy).

February 26, 2009 - 12:59 am Bibi - It LOOKS like a cold shot! Crisp, clear, frozen colors! Lovely. In potentially dangerous places, I often put the camera strap around my neck, even when I use a tripod. :<)

February 26, 2009 - 3:34 am Blognote - ...but the result is stunning, Greg!
